Dayton should learn from Columbus
March 27th, 2008 5:00 PM
Ellen Belcher: Dayton should learn from Columbus
By Ellen Belcher, Dayton Daily News
Sunday, March 23, 2008
Ohio's and Columbus' wooing of NetJets is a case study about the length states — this state — will go to get or keep jobs. And it's also a story that has implications for Dayton.

At the eye-popping cost of between $67 million and $100 million, NetJets was persuaded not to go South.
The near-miss — the company was poised to move to Raleigh, Orlando or Fort Worth — would have been a blow. Gov. Ted Strickland's administration and the City of Columbus will argue to their death that a recent Columbus Dispatch headline that screamed "2,000 jobs saved, 800 on the way" could just as easily been "2,000 jobs lost."

But, wow — up to $100 million in state and local incentives. That's $21 million more than what the Taft administration put on the table in 2006 to try to entice Honda to build an assembly plant in Ohio — also with 2,000 good-paying jobs. Ohio lost that bidding war to Greensburg, Ind.

NetJets, a Berkshire Hathway subsidiary, is the leader among businesses that sell fractional shares in private jets. It ferries executives to their business meetings and the rich and famous to the Super Bowl much the same way that the not-so-rich call a cab. It's an expensive way to fly, but not as expensive as buying your own jet.

Many analysts say the market for speedy light jet travel in a global economy is in its infancy and could be a spectacular growth industry. The push to keep the company in Columbus was driven by that bet, but also because the city and state don't want to lose a company that caters to the jet set — think Tiger Woods and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who are among NetJets' customers.

After all, being the operational home of this sort of outfit is so un-Rust Belt.
Maybe more important, though, letting a company that's already in a community — particularly one with this sort of footprint and work force — is a hundred times worse than losing a competition for new jobs that aren't already part of a community's fabric and economy.

Another take-away from the success is that Columbus is figuring out how to market its airport and ensure that business around it is booming. For crying out loud, it's even moving its radar station to give NetJets room to expand.

By contrast, bringing development to Dayton's airport is something this community has not figured out how to do. The open space and more than a few vacant buildings there are testament to that.

And growth isn't happening just at Columbus' main airport.
At Rickenbacker Airport, the effort is on to make it an international logistics hub, with trains, planes and trucks depositing and picking up everything from apparel to automotive parts. The development — which has been being nurtured now for almost 20 years — is still handsomely subsidized by Franklin County taxpayers, but the considerable new infrastructure at the old Air Force base that closed in 1980 is creating all sorts of economic development possibilities.

Location is a big part of the Rickenbacker equation, but Dayton is as blessed as Columbus in this regard. While Columbus is at the intersection of Interstates 70 and 71, Dayton's airport and lots of acreage near it is at the juncture of Interstates 70 and 75. Somehow that transportation nexus ought to be paying off.

It's also more than a little ironic that Columbus is promoting itself as an aviation center based on being a multi-modal transportation hub; becoming the home to a company that caters to high-end airline customers; and having Skybus Airlines for cheap fliers.

Meanwhile, Dayton's far richer aviation assets never quite translate to the economic development and marketing advantages that, by all rights, this region should be claiming and promoting. When you're home to the Wright brothers and the Wright-Patterson engineers who conceived the Stealth bomber, isn't that sexy enough to leverage and do something with?

Good for Columbus that it kept what it has. And if its success helps Ohio be seen as an aviation magnet, that certainly isn't bad for Dayton. But that city sure is getting a lot of mileage out of its tiny slice of the state's aviation assets. Call it doing more with less.

Streetcar Public Meeting - City to Unveil Financing Plan
March 19th, 2008 1:59 PM

Downtown Streetcar Enews

Streetcar Funding
City to Unveil Financing Plan

Last week in Mayor Coleman’s State of the City address, he talked about the excitement of bringing streetcars to Columbus. Now it’s time to hear how the project could be funded.

The City is reconvening the Streetcar Working Group to present the financing plan and get feedback. The public is invited to attend. Over the last six months, a team of national and local experts, hired by the City, has examined different strategies to pay for streetcars while meeting the Mayor’s requirement of no new citywide tax.

Streetcars received a huge vote of confidence at the Columbus Bicentennial Citizen’s Summit. Your voice is important.

Why Streetcars Make Sense for Columbus

Streetcars...

  1. Spur economic development and attract jobsA study by the Danter Group showed that a streetcar route in Downtown would attract millions of dollars in new economic development within five years of opening.
    • 3,000 jobs
    • 90,000 new visitors
    • 1,500 new housing units
    • 300 new hotel rooms

  2. Make Columbus greenStreetcars are powered by electricity. They’re clean and are easily accessible.

  3. Connect people to destinations Imagine catching a Blue Jackets game then hopping on the streetcar to go enjoy dinner at Mitchell’s and coming back to your car – without worrying about parking or gas. Streetcars will connect people to places and bring our neighborhoods together.

  4. Create excitement for young professionals, families and empty nestersThe Danter Group interviewed 1,000 people living in Columbus, and nearly 75% said “Yes!” they would ride a streetcar.

TRANSCRIPT: Read Mayor Coleman's State Of City Speech

Thursday, March 13, 2008 7:51 PM

I look back on my time as mayor of this great city and I know we've come so far together. Now in my 3rd term, I am even more energized today than when I first took this office, nine years ago. I have seen this City grow and prosper. We cannot take progress for granted, we cannot be passive about tomorrow. We must remain hungry for new ideas, hungry for change, hungry for transformation. Only a sense of urgency will make our City as great as it can be.

In 2012, our city will be 200 years old - and that's the time our city will begin our golden age, our renaissance. For the past year we've been working on the question of what we want our city to be by 2012 and beyond.

But, if we are going to continue this transformation, we must invest in our future. We must repair and build our roads. We must buy the trucks that pick up our trash. We must build Health Centers and Family Recreation Centers. We must increase pedestrian safety by building sidewalks. We must invest in our neighborhood's basic needs: parks, sewer and water lines, policing centers and bike paths. In short, we must meet the needs of our residents, today, tomorrow and for the next generation. And we can do this by going to the Ballot with the Bicentennial Bond Package this November. I am asking you to support your city, support your neighborhoods, and support your family. We can do this without raising taxes.  More...

For every one minute that an AED is delayed it reduces the chance of survival by 10%.

In addition to learning vital life-saving skills, receiving the CPR and First Aid training will broaden your options for many other volunteer opportunities with the Red Cross, both inside and outside of Friends, with the new skills and certification you will earn.

Thanks to generous support from our host, Huntington National Bank, snacks and lunch will be provided to attendees.

Chicago Tribune's 7 Reasons to Visit Columbus, OH
March 4th, 2008 6:28 PM

Columbus, Ohio

This big city often feels overlooked--maybe because it lacks major league football, baseball and basketball. Lesser urban centers so blessed often lack much of what Columbus has: a dynamic downtown, a wonderfully bohemian arts district, a lively theater and music scene, and top-notch museums. Of course, it's also the home of The Ohio State University (never leave off that "The"), which on football weekends is a Mecca for red-jersey-clad fans and an upper-echelon academic institution the rest of the year.

How to get there       • How's the weather?      • Top attractions      • Recommended resources      • Stories

Robert Cross' 7 reasons to go

1. Urban ambience
Cleveland seems to get more attention, but Columbus is bigger population-wise and rivals any town for big-city amenities.
2. Football weekends
You don't have to attend the game, just hang around the stadium and watch tailgating enthusiasm at its best.
3. Shopping
The Easton Town Center has made a stab at recreating streets and storefronts to house the big chains--just a dab of nostalgia to go with the merchandising.
4. The Columbus Zoo
Home base of TV star Jack Hanna. Need we say more?
5. Culture
Theaters, orchestras, dance companies, that university campus, art museums . . . and don't miss Topiary Park, where Georges Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grand Jatte" has been reproduced with plantings and hedge clippers.
6. Neighborhoods
Short North for artsy atmosphere, including massive murals reproducing masterpieces in amusing ways (i.e. a reclining Mona Lisa). Brewery District for dining and clubbing. German Village for restored immigrant housing. Italian Village (part of Short North) and great swaths of Victorian mansions on the North Side.
7. North Market
An indoor cornucopia of produce, meats and fancy specialties near the Convention Center.
