Explore the history of American music from ragtime to rock and roll and beyond. This six week course will explore and draw connections about the significant places, musicians and events in American history that fundamentally influenced music in all of its forms.

This class is designed for instrumentalists of all ages and abilities who would like a better understanding of jazz improvisation. Explore jazz rhythm and melody, with less emphasis on reading music, jazz theory and harmony. Experimentation with rhythmic and melodic concepts central to jazz performance will allow lots of time playing the music in class. You’re guaranteed to come away from this experience with a fresh perspective on jazz and improvisation.

Learn to listen to music more effectively while enhancing your enjoyment and appreciation of musical performances. Through listening and discussion, participants will compare and contrast various styles of jazz and explore the musicians and ensembles that made them famous. We’ll listen to the greats and explore the “standards” of popular song and songs that became popular as “Jazz Standards.” This class will include live performances by sax legend Gene Walker, piano legend John Ulrich and others including your instructor Jim Masters.

Columbus Crawl for Cancer
Benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Saturday April 12th 2008 1-5pm (plus an after-party at Lodge Bar)
At: Arena District Bars

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: At least 14 people needed to help out between 12:45 and 5PM. Volunteers would be stationed at the doors of the participating bars and “checking-in” teams as they arrive (verifying the team’s map that they’re at the right place and giving each team 4 drink tickets = 4 pitchers of beer).

While the volunteers are checking people in, they get two drink tickets of their own and at 5, they can head to the Lodge Bar to join the after-party where they’ll enjoy free beer for three hours. Not a bad deal, huh? Plus you get the cool Crawl For Cancer shirt too! =]

Artists and Creative Enterprise in Columbus

in the historic Lazarus building

Hosted by The Ohio State University College of the Arts, Department of Art Education
and Graduate Program in Arts Policy and Administration.

The 2008 Barnett Symposium will examine:
• the career pipeline for arts professionals in Columbus
• examples of arts enterprises in development
• the dynamics of the creative work environment.

Also, learn about higher education programs in visual, media and performing arts that offer
courses in business skills, entrepreneurship and professional practices for BFA and MFA students.

Through guest presentations and panel discussions, the 2008 Barnett Symposium will examine how
initiatives concerning artists and creative enterprise affect the local creative economy.
