Racial Identity
People from all backgrounds, races, and ethnicities are encouraged to participate in this Day of Action. If you choose to, we thank you for sharing your racial identity. Doing so helps us track progress as we strive to build a diverse and inclusive movement for green jobs and the green economy.

Sign onto the "I'm Ready" Petition

I urge our elected officials to invest in creating millions of green jobs and a Clean Energy Corps. We can't drill and burn our way out of the current crisis. We can invest and invent our way out. We can create new pathways out of poverty and curb global warming at the same time. We will do this by retooling our factories, rebuilding our communities, and repowering America with 100% clean and renewable electricity. It's time to build an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty.

Experience Columbus Days Oct. 10-13
September 26th, 2008 1:47 PM

Come Play in Our Backyard Oct. 10-13

Take advantage of discounts to top area attractions and restaurants during Experience Columbus Days

COLUMBUS, Ohio (September 24, 2008) – BalletMet’s audience favorite “Dracula.” The Wexner Center for the Art’s blockbuster exhibit “Andy Warhol: Other Voices, Other Rooms.” The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The Kelton House Museum and Garden and the Columbus Italian Festival.

These are just some of the attractions and events you’ll be able to see at a discount during Experience Columbus Days, Oct. 10-13. And in between visiting attractions, you can dine at some of the city’s best restaurants and get 25 percent off your food bill.

Now in its fifth year, the statewide and regional promotion encourages locals to see Columbus the way visitors do and entices out-of-town visitors to experience the city.

“The theme is ‘Come play in our backyard’ and that’s exactly what we want both locals and visitors to do every Columbus Day weekend. Our goal is to make Greater Columbus THE place to be,” said Paul D. Astleford, president and CEO. “This promotion gives residents opportunities to enjoy their city at a bargain, and also will bring more visitors into Greater Columbus and through the doors of Central Ohio attractions, restaurants and hotels. “Tourism matters,” says Astleford. ”The tourism industry accounts for one in every twelve jobs in central Ohio and the taxes generated by the tourism industry support the local arts, public services and social services in Central Ohio.”

As in previous years, many attractions and events will offer 50 percent discounts off admission. For a second year, a 25 percent discount will be offered by the more than 40 members of Dine Originals Columbus, a group of independently owned and operated restaurants and one of several chapters of Dine Originals America.

Experience Columbus Days will be promoted statewide and regionally through a targeted online advertising campaign, as well as locally through print ads and radio spots. Playing off the “Come play in our backyard” theme, “fences” will be located in front of many participating attractions and restaurants.

For complete details, visit ExperienceColumbusDays.com where you’ll find a flyer needed to secure discounts at participating establishments.

Experience Columbus is the destination sales and marketing organization for the Greater Columbus community. Formerly the Greater Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau, Experience Columbus works with the Columbus community to create a competitive distinction in the visitor marketplace, attracting leisure visitors, conventions and meetings.

Public Forum: Integrating Public Art into City Design

Public art enhances a city's quality of life, making the places where we live, work and play more welcoming and beautiful. It also creates a deeper interaction between the community and its environment, adds dimension to civic spaces, increases a community's assets by creating images that help define a space and allows a community to express its identity and values, along with enhancing roadsides, pedestrian corridors and community gateways.

But how can and should a city integrate public art into city planning? Maurice Cox, Director of Design for the National Endowment for the Arts, will answer that question and more at the 2008 GCAC Public Forum, which will take place from 8:30-10 a.m. on Friday, October 17 at the BalletMet Performance Space, 322 Mt. Vernon Ave. Cox will speak about his experience with city design and public art before taking questions from the audience.

The annual Public Forum allows GCAC to monitor the pulse of the arts community while providing the public with the opportunity to directly address the Board of Trustees on any arts issue of interest. After Cox's presentation, Forum attendees will have the chance to address the Board and GCAC President Bryan W. Knicely.

When:
8:30-10 a.m. Friday, October 17

28.  KIDSConnect, a program of the Educational Council, serves middle school students in southeastern Franklin County. Students receive academic assistance and social enrichment opportunities in an afterschool setting that fosters positive connections between family, school and community. Included are homework assistance, teambuilding activities and service learning projects with ATOD prevention, environmental and nutrition & fitness themes. KIDSConnect has an 11 year history of providing afterschool programs aligned with local and national standards for quality service and best practices, while providing real-world training for college age site coordinators.

As a new program initiative, KIDSConnect is starting mentorship programs in Hamilton-Local, Whitehall, Groveport & Canal Winchester School Districts. We are working with the districts to provide such programming. The objective of these mentorship programs is for adult mentors and middle school mentees to learn and grow together in one-to-one relationships. Mentors will help students develop needed assets and practical skills that can be applied in school and in the community. This program is not a "tutoring" program, instead mentors and mentees will participate in leader lead activities focusing on social skill development, self awareness, building friendships, and to gain insight into options for the future. Mentors and mentees will meet at the same time & location each month for the duration of the school year. There will always be a leader present during meetings.

Mentors are required to complete an interest form, provide references, complete a background check (paid by our organization), and participate in a "how to mentor" training provided by the Mentoring Center of Central Ohio. Mentors and mentees will meet for 1 hour either once or twice a month (depending on mentor's schedules).

Gay St Indie Arts Festival - "Independent's Day" Sept 20
September 16th, 2008 3:53 PM

CRAZY URBAN PEOPLES

Oh, those crazy urban peoples - celebrating Independence Day on September 20.

Except it’s not Independence Day; it’s Independents’ Day.  Gay Street and Pearl Alley are set to house over one hundred booths from local artists and organizations, and there’s music too.

Music, art… do gooders.  You’ve seen that?  Okay, how about this:

Feminist Transportation
Drupal
Wearable Technology

The Independents’ Day event will also feature an idea convention in The Vault from noon until 7 pm.  Presenters are invited to come and present whatever brainstorm seems worthy of sharing with the universe.  It’s Mike Reed’s task to organize these presenters (and independent spirits).  When asked about some of those quirky topics, Mr. Reed was candid, “Who knows?  Not me.”

While it might be a little late in the game to sign up as a presenter, it’s not too late to volunteer for the event.  Check out thisisindependent.com to get involved and sign up.

9.  COLUMBUS MUSIC CO-OP INVITED TO SPEAK AT FMC EVENT IN CHICAGO, IL
The CMC, a local non-profit organization, asked to speak about healthcare issues for musicians.

(Chicago, IL) The Future of Music Coalition (FMC) has organized a musician-education event at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, IL on Monday, Sept 22.  It' will be a day-long event where musicians can attend panel-led discussions and breakout sessions, all geared towards providing practical information for working musicians.

In 2000, the Future of Music Coalition was conceived as an organization that would work to build structures to create a musicians' middle class. It was clear to FMC that, while the music industry has made a handful of artists very wealthy, the vast majority of musicians live gig-to-gig, unable to afford the basic protections and securities of life that allow them to continue making their art and, equally important, without a way to educate themselves to break out of this cycle.

Since their inception, FMC has focused on elements that would allow musicians to better participate in the issues that affect their livelihood, including helping musicians navigate the often-confusing world of health insurance coverage.

Since 2005, FMC has been running a project called HINT -- the Health Insurance Navigation Tool – a free online and phone consultation service for musicians. http://www.futureofmusic.org/hint/

At the Sept. 22 Chicago event, the healthcare discussion will be from 2-3PM and the panel will include FMC's HINT coordinator Alex Maiolo, Nan Warshaw from Bloodshot Records, as well as the Columbus Music Co-op founders Erin Moore and Jessica Faller, who were asked by the FMC to come and explain their Columbus Musician's Assistance Program (CMAP) and to represent grassroots, social entrepreneurship.

Under CMAP, The Columbus Music Co-op awards mini-grants to working Central Ohio musicians lacking health insurance coverage and who are experiencing health-related financial hardships.

The Columbus Music Co-op was founded in 2005 with a mission of making Columbus a better place through music.  The grassroots community organization launched their CMAP fund earlier this year and hosts workshops and networking events for the Central Ohio music community.
