Halloween Happenings

By Sara Mitchell

Trick or Treat is no longer the only night of the year to celebrate Halloween. As growing up continues to inevitably happen, every holiday evolves. For Halloween, the evolution is from dressing up for candy to dressing up for booze and escapism from being a grown-up. This week, All Hallows Eve will begin tonight (Wednesday) and last until November comes. Here are a few activities taking place around the city to wet your whistle and quench your thirst for the most ghoulish of holidays.

Screams on Screen: Nightmare on Elm Street at Ohio Union

Wednesday, 27th at 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Starting on Wednesday evening, people can get their feet wet with a little on-screen terror. "Nightmare on Elm Street" will be playing at the Ohio Union at 6 p.m., and then again at 8:30 p.m. The movie itself is not the only free thing of the evening. Drinks and food will also be served. Audience members are invited to wear their costume to help get in the mood for the holiday.

In the 1984 classic horror film, Freddy stalks the dreams of children from the mob families that killed him. Feeding on the age-old fear of the monster in the closet, this film uses sleeping and dreaming to sink under the skin of childhood anxieties.

Freaky, Fetishes, and Fun: Trauma at BoMA

Thursday, 28th at 9 p.m.

Halloween is, if nothing else, a giant make-believe extravaganza. This party at BoMA takes such a notion to the extreme. Providing partygoers with an outlet to express lustful fantasies, the evening promises fantasy and fascination. One can expect music by artists like roeVy, Anna and the Annadroids and Viva Valezz. The party goes beyond the dance floor and bleeds into the atmosphere of the guests. Sexy fetish gear and tempting outfits set the scene for a thrilling event.

The night, organized by Evolved, starts at 9 pm on Thursday and lasts till the early morning. Guests can purchase tickets ahead of time for $15 or otherwise pay twenty at the door.

Scary Social: Halloween party at OSU

Thursday, 28th at 8 p.m.

For those seeking a school-organized event, Hillel of OSU offers a costume party to preview your costume. While this party is just an hour, it still allows for a way to kick start the evening and start off the Halloween season.

Stop by the Wexner Jewish Center on The Ohio State campus to check this event out on Thursday night.

Monster Mash: German Village 2010 Monster Bash

Friday, 29th at 8 p.m.

German Village combines community and festivities on Friday night with their annual Monster Bash. The evening begins at 8 p.m. in the 600 block of City Park Avenue for trick or treating and beverages. From there, party hoppers can move on to the Monster Bash located at the Brenton Warner Fest Hall, where even more food is to be had. In addition to food provided by Max & Erma's, there will be a costume contest, dancing and the reveal of Columbus Brewing Company's fall ale.

Tickets can be purchased online for discounts in bulk and German Village residents. Non-village member? It's sixty dollars, all-inclusive for the night!

Don't get booed off the stage: Spooky Karaoke at Woody's Tavern

Friday, 29th at 5:30 pm

This themed happy hour will fill your lungs with all the Halloween clichéd songs you can handle before heading out on the town to be spooked. Start the Halloween weekend off by creating a scary soundtrack at the Ohio Union.

Light appetizers will be served and alcohol can be purchased to start the evening off right. Feel free to embrace your costume and throw it on for the pre-festivities song and dance show.

HighBall Halloween: Masquerade on High

Saturday, 30th at 3 p.m.

For $5 this Saturday, you can enter the mystical Halloween world that is the Masquerade on High Street. The third-annual event will provide a festive atmosphere for costume designers to compete for $1,000. Ten designers will get the chance to design the best costume and get the title of Best Costume, in addition to their winnings. The whole event will take place in conjunction with other festivities to enjoy.

Activities will be available for kids, families and single adults. Starting in the early afternoon children can trick or treat through the Arena District. Later on, child and adult costumes will be judged and prizes given. The capstone event between designers will be revealed at 8 p.m. All throughout the day, beverages and candy will be around for consumption.

Stop by at any point from 3-11 p.m. to release your inner ghost or ghoul.

Hideous Halloween: Ugly Tuna Events

Friday & Sunday

Friday night Ugly Tuna will take a spin on Girls Gone Wild with their Ghouls Gone Wild costume contest. The restaurant will host an ongoing evening where bar hoppers will be judged on their spooky outfits. Coming back on Sunday evening will be a way to close the weekend in song. Scary-Oke Karoke will cap things off with a second costume contest at the gateway restaurant and bar.

McFadden's Halloween: Naughtiest Costume in Columbus

Saturday, 30th

Another gateway restaurant hosting a costume contest will be McFadden's. On Saturday night, another place to stop will be here to show off your creativity and pick up a few drinks along the way. Might as well get your money's worth out of the costume you bought by stopping at as many spots and sharing drinks with new friends.

Get Kreepy at KOBO

Friday & Saturday

KOBO has a Halloween music show planned to honor Van Halen on Friday night. The band Van Haken will play during the night with other bands and a happy hour from 7 to 9 p.m. The theme here is dancing till you die at KOBO Saturday night for their Dance or Die event. The show will be hosted by DJ Self Help and DJ Barticus and will last well into the night.

Halloween doesn't have to just be one night anymore. Columbus has found a way to draw out the celebrated candy holiday into nearly a week of happenings. If drinking is not the route you want to go, wear your costume down then stop by any of the numerous trick or treat and movie nights.

The season won't end when the clock strikes midnight on Halloween either. Numerous fall festivals dip into the beginning of November with apple picking, pumpkins and hayrides to provide daytime entertainment.

If you choose to trick yourself out for the night any of these options will be sure to give you a treat!
