State of the Young Professional

The Columbus Chamber invites you to State of the Young Professional. Join us to hear an update on the challenge Rebecca Ryan, founder of Next Generation Consulting, issued for the Columbus Region to become a more attractive place for young professionals to live, work and play. The Columbus Chamber and partners will share progress on the program of work that has been developed to make the city more attractive, improve connections for young professionals and convince former residents to return to Columbus. You’ll also hear how these programs are affecting the attraction of new businesses and their employees; the impact of the young professional demographic; and how you can get involved. Don’t miss this important update and the opportunity to network with corporate and government stakeholders.

You’ll also have the opportunity to “tell your story” about why you love Columbus, the changes you’ve been a part of and how you’ve been connected to opportunities, resources and people.

Alan Crockett: Mark Making
Opens: November 6, 2008 - January 24, 2009

From his earliest figurative narrations to his suggestive pre-figurations of bountiful color, Alan Crockett has always been a painter's painter; dedicated to the canvas, to the brush, to the gesture. His retirement this year forms the occasion for this mini-retrospective of a life in the studio, and a life dedicated to art, teaching, and family.

Mark Making traces, through paintings and drawings, some dating back toundergraduate work, Crockett's prolific output in the studio and offers viewers the opportunity to really see and understand the meaning of a life-long artistic practice.  On view are selections from Crockett's thirty-six years of research into the power of symbol and metaphor, the nuances of investigation and discovery, the subtleties of poetic color, the possibilities of line, shape, gesture. All contribute to his adventurous journey of learning to speak the language of art and life through the painted canvas.  "Crockett's fearlessness as a painter, his continued willingness to challenge himself aesthetically and always push his paintings to the next level, is clearly visible as one walks through the exhibition," comments co-curator Prudence Y. Gill.

As Crockett recently stated, "To have a subject for a painting is more limiting than liberating. I have to get past ideas to have a painting act as an adventure for me. If I remove the subject, then I can find what the painting is all about."  Join us at the OSU Urban Arts Space and find out what a life dedicated to creative purpose can give to the arts and the community that experience the artist's work.

Alan Crockett is the recipient of multiple Ohio Arts Council and Greater Columbus Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships, a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship, and a Ford Foundation Grant.  He has presented his work in solo and group exhibitions across North America and in Europe. He has been a visiting artist at numerous universities and academic institutions including University of Illinois, Minerva Academy of Art-Holland, and Texas Tech.

Originally a lawyer, Crockett served in the Air Force as a JAG officer and then as a state assistant prosecutor in Eugene, Oregon. He returned to school in the early seventies to earn his BFA and MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute. After teaching in Oregon and Texas, Crockett, with his young family, arrived in Columbus as an assistant professor in the Department of Art in 1980. He retired in spring 2008.

Co-curated by Prudence Gill and Jan O'Dea.

Columbus Chamber
Spacer1

You Set the Agenda

The Columbus Chamber is developing its 2009 program of work to attract and retain Young Professionals and we want to know what you think.

Please take a few minutes to take a survey about being a young professional in Columbus. The survey will help us measure our progress and see where you think work still needs to be done during the coming year. The survey will also measure the economic impact that young professionals have on our region, information that we will use as we advocate for young professional issues to stakeholders and government officials. By completing the survey, we’ll put you in a drawing for a $100 gas card.

Take the survey here or follow the link:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=3KGA7_2bCBKmnkY0O1vIaOaQ_3d_3d.

The Columbus Chamber will present the findings of the survey at the upcoming State of the Young Professional event on Thursday, Nov. 13.

Please forward this email to friends, colleagues and family members that are young professionals in the Columbus Region.

Please complete the survey before Friday, Oct. 31 to be included in the results for the State of the Young Professional event.

Don’t forget to sign up for the State of the Young Professional event on Thursday, November 13 at the Arena Grand Theatre. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. and you can sign up to “tell your story” in our video booth at the reception immediately following the program. Registration and more information here.

Greetings everyone,

I hope all is well.  This year, my company, JPRC has been charged with the wonderful task of coordinating the 6th Annual Red Hot Gala for the 100 Black Men of Central Ohio.  The event will take place on Saturday, November 29, 2008 from 6-12 midnight.  Tickets are $75 and a portion of the proceeds will go toward supporting the Mentoring program of the 100 BMCO and your contribution is tax deductible.

The 100 Black Men of America, Inc., is a national organization devoted to improving the quality of life of our Communities, and enhancing educational and economic opportunities for all African Americans. The 100 BMCO was established to develop and implement community service projects to invigorate Columbus' African-American community for the 21st century and beyond.

In its 6th year, the gala has attracted a variety of influential leaders and local celebrities throughout Central Ohio. This black tie affair will feature live entertainment, music and more importantly, will salute the achievements of those individuals who have made a difference in the lives of children in Central Ohio

This year the 100 BMCO will be honoring:
Yvette McGee-Brown ( Center for Child and Family Advocacy at Nationwide Children's Hospital)
Clarence D. Lumpkin ( Community activist)
Eddie Harrell, Jr. ( Columbus Urban League)
Allen Huff ( The Neighborhood House)
Jerry Saunders (APDS).

I am asking for your support in making this year's event a huge success.  One of the ways you can assist this effort will be through purchasing a ticket, advertising your church, organization or business in the program book or getting friends, colleagues and members of your organization to commit to sponsoring or co-sponsoring a table.  The cost to sponsor a table is $1,000 and includes a full page ad in the program.  If you, your company or organization is interested please let me know.  Also, I have attached an e- flyer that you may circulate or post if you wish.

Again, thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to speaking with you soon.  Have a wonderful day!

CRP Executive Director Roberta Garber and Steve Gladman, Executive Director of the Affordable Housing Trust for Columbus and Franklin County, presented the Prevention and Recovery Advisory Plan to the Health, Housing and Human Services Committee of Columbus City Council on October 15th.

At the meeting Steve Gladman noted that he has seen a great deal of foreclosure research presented at regional and national meetings, but "Clearly the work of Community Research Partners is the best research to date."  The advisory plan describes strategies for eight target areas, which represent three neighborhood types: 1) City-County Interface Areas; 2) Converging Investment Neighborhoods; and 3) Weak Market Neighborhoods. The plan notes that these strategies could be applied to other areas of the city and county with characteristics similar to the target areas.

The Working Group report can be downloaded here.

More Jobs, Housing, Offices and Retail Coming to Arena District

(Columbus) Mayor Michael B. Coleman will ask City Council to consider legislation that would allow the City to sell property at Neil and Vine streets to make way for a $250 million investment that would bring about 1,000 new jobs, housing and office space to the Arena District. The legislation was on Council’s agenda tonight for a first reading.

“I am pleased with growth of the Arena District, which continues to bring  together development, businesses and residents to show what can be done to bring a new generation of investment,” said Mayor Coleman. “And I’m especially excited about adding 1,000 jobs in this tough economy.”

NWD Investments will purchase the 2.4 acre lot for $2 million and plans to develop a 250 unit multi-family housing project in this area. This site, when combined with adjacent properties already owned by NWD Investments, allows for development of the northern boundaries of the Arena District and the completion of an expanded master plan that includes residential apartments, office buildings, parking garages and, through a partnership with Continental Real Estate, a Giant Eagle grocery store.

This final phase of Arena District development will result in an additional $250 million in private investment, bringing total private investment in the Arena District to roughly $1 billion.

“With this significant project, Nationwide is continuing its long standing commitment to revitalizing the heart of our city,” said Development Committee Chair Maryellen O’Shaughnessy.  “They have a proven track record of success when it comes to understanding the challenges of urban development.”

The Arena District is located in a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District. Nationwide Reality Investors will be responsible for infrastructure costs upfront and will be reimbursed from 100 percent of available TIF funds. TIF revenue will be generated from existing Arena-area TIFs. Funding for the Giant Eagle parking structure will also come from TIF revenues. Infrastructure improvements include: Neil Avenue, Vine Street, Brodbelt, Convention Center Drive improvements and transmission lines.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with the City of Columbus and continue to develop in Downtown Columbus,” said Brian J. Ellis, President and COO of Nationwide Realty Investors. “This expansion of the Arena District will bring even more people to live and work in the Arena District and downtown Columbus, creating an energy and vitality that is essential for a successful downtown.”

Recent development in the Arena District includes the completion of the Condominiums at North Bank Park and an office building at 230 West Street, as well as the ongoing construction of Huntington Park.

Forbes Ranks Cbus as #1 for Nest Eggs
October 24th, 2008 1:58 PM

Cities Where Your Nest Egg Goes Farthest
Maurna Desmond, 10.20.08, 4:00 PM ET
A significant number of Americans will soon retire, but the economic downturn may be causing some to rethink how they'll spend their golden years.

Topping the list of second-act must haves? A place with affordable housing, low cost of living and decent job prospects.

That's what they'll find in Columbus, Ohio. This river city tops our list of cities where your nest egg goes farthest, thanks to reasonably priced housing relative to income and a 4.5% inflation rate that allows a buck to stretch a little further than other quickly growing areas. With tens of thousands of Ohio State Buckeyes, folks will enjoy the verve and energy that comes with a bustling college town.

In Depth: Cities Where Your Nest Egg Goes Farthest
Texas also welcomes retirees. Dallas and Houston ranked second and fourth, respectively. A warm climate and growing economies make both of these spots great places to live up your golden years. Each city can brag about latter-year employment possibilities for the enterprising type; that's because 20% of those 65 and over collect a weekly paycheck.

Minneapolis, Minn., ranked third. The South made a strong showing with No. 9 Atlanta and No. 10 Nashville, Tenn.
Behind the Numbers
To find the best areas in the U.S. for a sustainable and exciting second act, we ranked the 40 largest Census-defined metropolitan statistical areas and looked at cost of living factors like housing affordability and inflationary pressures. All our data was provided by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics and the U.S. Census.

With a growing number of retirees planning on continuing to work or start a second career, we also factored in the number of persons over 65 who are currently employed.

To get a pulse on what retirees are thinking based on where they flock, we looked at net migration for persons over 65. To get a feel for how they fare in their community, we looked at what percent of people living below the poverty level are in their golden years.

Finally, with retirees living longer and health a top priority, we included the number of doctors per capita, as well as the number of citizens tapping their Medicare benefits per thousand people--an important issue for those 65 and older.

The Census in August reported that by 2030, nearly one in five U.S. residents is expected to be 65 and older. By 2050, this silver-haired crowd is expected to increase to 88.5 million, more than doubling the 38.7 million currently. What's more, the 85 and older population is expected to more than triple, from 5.4 million to 19 million between 2008 and 2050.

Most in this burgeoning demographic will want--and need--to make their dollars stretch as much as possible. This relates to longer life expectancy and shorter savings among baby boomers as much as it relates to suddenly slimmer nest eggs.

Top Spots
Cynthia Rickman, a spokesperson for the Columbus Department of Development, says Columbus attracts retirees because the community is walkable and has a low-cost of living. What's more, empty nesters are migrating in droves from the suburbs to the city's recently revitalized downtown....

...It was former U.S President Calvin Coolidge who said, "There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no one independence quite so important, as living within your means."

Most important, make sure that no matter where you retire, sticking to your budget won't get in the way of living your life the way you want to.

No. 10 Nashville, Tenn.
With a population of 1,486,695, this city came in at No. 9 for affordable housing. It was also one of our Best Places for Business in 2007. Add in pleasant weather and all the benefits a community derives from a top-notch university like Vanderbilt, and you've got a fine place to retire.

No. 9 Atlanta, Ga.
This southern city isn't just for young singletons and families. In terms of net migration among people over 65, Atlanta ranked No. 3 with droves of older Americans picking this affordable and desirable place to spend their golden years.

No. 8 St. Louis, Mo.
Meet me in St. Louis. Seriously. Greater St. Louis is growing fast and with good reason. Affordable housing and sluggish inflation (just 3.2% in June 2008) make this is a great place to retire.

No. 7 Denver, Colo.
A Rocky Mountain retirement will involve outdoor living, a vibrant nightlife and a manageable cost of living. Denver, one of Forbes.com's Best Cities for Singles, attracts people of all ages making it a good long-term bet for retirees who want to ensure that they are settling somewhere with a bright future.

© iStockphoto
No. 6 Indianapolis, Ind.
This Midwestern city ranked No. 1 for housing affordability relative to income and No. 8 for inflation. Students from Purdue and Indiana University share a campus in town and provide youthful vibrancy, while Colts fans up the energy even further, making this a reasonably priced and lively place to retire.

No. 5 Salt Lake City, Utah
Utah's capital is growing fast. With nearly 16 doctors per thousand people--far above the national average--retirees can be reassured by the cluster of medical professionals and facilities nearby. With a median age of 30, retirees may not blend in, but they can be sure that economic growth is ahead.

No. 4 Houston, Texas
Forbes.com's Best Place to Buy a Home is, not surprisingly, a great place to retire. With tax revenues flowing from the oil and alternative energy industries centered there and a bustling tech scene, retirees won't need to worry that they are settling into a place on the slide. Throw in affordable housing and sunny weather, and Houston is a great place to begin again.

No. 3 Minneapolis, Minn.
This twin city has a reputation for big city arts and nightlife, but it can accommodate a retiree's fixed budget. While the winter may be rough, the cost of living won't be.

No. 2 Dallas, Texas
Dallas has a robust economy, thanks to the many corporations headquartered in the city's center. With sunny weather, low taxes and Southern hospitality, this Texas town is a great place to retire.

No. 1 Columbus, Ohio
Home to the Ohio State Buckeyes, Midwestern Columbus has a low cost of living and affordable housing--seniors seem to get along just fine. More than a fifth of folks over 65 are employed, and that age group only constitutes 6% of persons living under the poverty level, which indicates that independent living is en vogue in this river city.

Wexner Center Political Films
October 24th, 2008 1:26 PM
In this intense political season, the Wexner Center is proud to present several films that one way or another address the contested terrain of public affairs and discourse. Touching on such issues as secrecy, confidentiality, Homeland security, the collection and classification of private data, activism, electioneering, and the media, this suite of films offers a multi-faceted look at how political thought is constructed and conveyed.  We want to particularly draw your attention to Secrecy, which will be screened on Saturday, November 1 at 7pm, and introduced by co-director and Harvard professor Robb Moss. Secrecy provocatively examines the complexities and layers of our government's obsession with secrecy and the effects it has had on individuals and on our country.  We look forward to welcoming you to the Wex, and please feel free to share this with others who may be interested, including students and co-workers.
November is right around the corner and that means you have the opportunity to join the Wexner Center for the screening of Secrecy on Saturday, November 1 @ 7pm. More details on the screening below in a message from the Wexner Center's Director Sherri Geldin. You can read more and purchase tickets at http://wexarts.org/fv/index.php?eventid=3419. If you are a ColumbusArts Card member, you can use your card to get up to two Wexner Center for the Arts film vouchers.

November 4 - VOTE!  Each year Americans for the Arts compiles election information around arts issues. ArtsVote2008 features information on key elections and the candidates' positions on key arts-related issues. You can also view the Summary of 2008 Presidential Candidates Arts Positions at http://www.artsactionfund.org/pdf/press/McCain_Obama_record_final.pdf.  Speaking of voting, you have the opportunity to make your voice be heard on American Style Magazine's Top 25 Arts Destinations. After you VOTE (or before), stop by Franklin Park Conservatory for Bending Nature: Nature Shaped by Art. On December 31 of this year, the UN mandate legalizing multinational force in Iraq is set to expire. Anticipating this milestone - and considering the history of US presence in the Persian Gulf - expert panelists Charles Tucker, Jr. and Ida Aghdas Mirzaie will explore all legal options of foreign policy from political, military, economic and humanitarian perspectives.

Air Force Brigadier General Charles Tucker, Jr. is the Executive Director of the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul Law School in Chicago. Throughout his distinguished military career, Brigadier General Tucker has held numerous posts as a humanitarian law practitioner and adviser for various civil, governmental, and humanitarian groups worldwide. Drawing on over twenty years of experience in these sectors, he will address the legality of US presence in Iraq, exit strategy, and the political implications of the impending withdrawal.

Dr. Ira Aghdas Mirzaie, senior lecturer at The Ohio State University, is an economics scholar of Iranian origin. Her work includes publications and speaking engagements for such global organizations as the International Monetary Fund and Economic Research Forum for Arab Countries. Examining Iran's regime of sanctions and the recent repatriation of former Iraqi leaders, she will speak to the economic issues facing the US in its quest to normalize Iran/Iraq relations.

Columbus, OH is the Number One Sports Town in the U.S.

Last update: 12:31 p.m. EDT Oct. 1, 2008
NEW YORK, Oct 01, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Boston, Buffalo and Pittsburgh Also Leading Sports Cities
Columbus, OH is the number one sports town in the U.S., according to a recent analysis by sports fan research firm Scarborough Sports Marketing. The analysis aggregated the avid fans* of the 29 sports measured by Scarborough, including the major leagues, motor sports, college sports, minor leagues, the Olympics and more (for a full list of sports included in the analysis, please see the end of this press release). Two-thirds (66%) of adults in Columbus are avid sports fans*. Boston, Buffalo and Pittsburgh round-out the top markets for avid sports fans. Sixty-four percent of Boston adults are avid sports fans, as are 63% of those in Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Nationally, 56% of all adults are avid sports fans.

"Each of the leading sports towns typically has one or two major teams that carry the market. In Columbus, it is college football. The Ohio State Buckeyes football team commands a more concentrated fan base than any other NCAA team measured by Scarborough. Additionally, the NHL Blue Jackets and the MLS Crew call Columbus home, and the city is surrounded by other major markets with established histories in professional sports -- including Cincinnati and Cleveland," said Howard Goldberg, senior vice president, Scarborough Sports Marketing. "Columbus sports fans also have the added benefit of close proximity to the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, OH."

Scarborough also examined home city fan bases of teams in the top sports towns. While Columbus may be known for having a high percentage of Ohio State college football fans, other leading sports towns are popular for their dominating major league teams. Boston, the #2 sports town in the U.S., has two major league teams with high popularity: the Red Sox (71% of Boston adults are Red Sox fans**) and the New England Patriots (67% of Boston adults are Patriots fans).

The Bills dominate Buffalo, as 66% of its residents are Bills fans. Based on percent of the market, Buffalo also boasts the NHL team with the largest home city fan base in the country: the Sabres. Fifty-nine percent of Buffalo adults are Sabres fans.

In Pittsburgh, it's all about the Steelers. Seventy-five percent of Pittsburgh adults are Steelers fans. In fact, based on percent of the market, the Steelers command the second largest local fan base of any team in the country. Green Bay is the city with the highest percentage of fans of a single team. With 81 percent of Green Bay adults being Packers fans, the Packers rank as the sports team with the most concentrated home city fan base in the country.

"Green Bay is a stand-out sports town. Almost the entire market is fans of the Packers, and half are fans of the University of Wisconsin Badgers football team. This illustrates that a city does not need to have a plethora of major league teams to be an outstanding sports market," said Mr. Goldberg.

Charts follow below.

It's time for an etiquette lesson on bowling.  We all know that it's impolite to shout "NICE BUNS!" when a bowler is preparing to launch the ball.  But it's gonna take a little more finesse to roll with the crew at Downtown's Next Big Thing.

1.  Stay in your lane.  This seems obvious, but it bears reminding.  It is not funny to send your ball rolling down your neighbor's alley.
